The Cause

Help Kultivate Labs transform the Mission St in San Francisco, into a Filipino cultural corridor in 2024 and beyond! We’re on a mission to develop a dynamic, culturally vibrant area by introducing new programs, revitalizing empty retail spaces at key locations like 5M and the Westfield Mall, and addressing the recent significant budget cuts. Your support will ensure the continuation of our vital cultural and economic development efforts. Join us in shaping a brighter future for our community—every contribution brings us closer to a thriving, inclusive Filipino cultural hub.

  • As we head into 2025, Kultivate Labs faces a significant challenge that threatens to derail our efforts in revitalizing the SOMA Pilipinas commercial corridor. Due to the city’s ongoing budget deficits, exacerbated by the “Doom Loop” effects, many of our crucial grants have been cut or reduced. This fiscal strain forced us to make difficult decisions this year, including reducing the number of UNDISCOVERED Creative Markets from three to just one, freezing all pay increases, and even laying off a team member. These setbacks pose a serious risk to the momentum we have built in economic development and cultural programming in SOMA Pilipinas.

  • If we fail to address this funding crisis, the economic and cultural development of SOMA Pilipinas might stall. This would not only hinder our ability to support local businesses and artists but could also lead to the loss of cultural vibrancy and community engagement that we have worked so hard to foster. It is imperative that we act now to prevent these setbacks and ensure the continued growth and success of our mission.

  • We call on our community, stakeholders, and new supporters to join us in this critical moment. Your support through donations, attending our fundraising events, or spreading the word will provide the lifeline we need to continue our work. Help us preserve and enrich the cultural heart of SOMA Pilipinas. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for our community.

Imagine transforming Westfield Mall into a vibrant Filipino cultural hub that spans from the ground floor to the 4th floor, inspired by the remarkable successes of Japantown Cultural District and Stonestown Mall. By filling vacant spaces with innovative Filipino food concepts, small businesses, cultural events, and art installations, we envision a bustling center that celebrates the rich heritage and entrepreneurial spirit of the Filipino community.

While Japantown thrives with cultural attractions, SOMA PILIPINAS faces the challenge of a half-empty mall. The time to transform and energize this space is now. This initiative will not only boost economic activity and support local businesses but also create a welcoming and inclusive environment, making downtown San Francisco a lively and culturally enriched destination. Together, we can turn this vision into a beacon of cultural pride and community strength.

Our Vision For 2025

Expanding the SOMA PILIPINAS Cultural Corridor

Building on the foundation of cultural hubs like Kapwa Gardens and the new Bituin Tattoo and Art Gallery, we are partnering with 5M Brookfield Development to bring a Filipino coffee shop and a barbershop to the area. The Filipino American Development Foundation is also acquiring property nearby, further cementing our community’s presence. Our celebrated UNDISCOVERED SF events at 5M have already demonstrated the power of Filipino culture to unite and inspire, mitigating gentrification concerns and fostering a sense of belonging.

Together with the revitalization of Westfield Mall, these efforts will create a thriving Filipino cultural corridor in SOMA PILIPINAS, mirroring the success of Japantown and Chinatown. This initiative is not just about economic development; it’s about building a vibrant, inclusive future that honors our heritage and empowers our community. The opportunity to transform SOMA PILIPINAS is now, and together, we can make this dream a reality.

  • The 5M Brookfield Development in San Francisco’s SoMa district is poised to become a beacon of cultural and economic revitalization. This ambitious project, encompassing residential, commercial, and cultural spaces like The George apartments and The Parks at 5M, is transforming the urban landscape. However, the development has sparked concerns about gentrification within the community. To address these fears and ensure inclusive growth, we are committed to filling the commercial spaces, currently 100% empty, with vibrant Filipino businesses.

We recently hosted our Crowdfunding Launch Party, Hiraya, at Salesforce Tower, and it was an evening to remember. The event was a celebration of Filipino excellence, where community stakeholders, adorned in modern Barong and Filipiniana, mingled with creatives, entrepreneurs, and funders. The energy was electric, and the room was filled with hope and enthusiasm for our shared vision.

While we’ve had a fantastic start, our journey is far from over. Our overall goal is to raise $80,000 in 60 days, and we are just getting started. Your support is vital in helping us reach this milestone and continue our work in transforming Mission St into a vibrant Filipino cultural corridor.
